Cape Town, South Africa, 4 June 2026 — In a world where people are more digitally connected than ever before, genuine human connection can sometimes feel rare. Photographer Mariusz Szczawinski and digital marketing agency owner Michelle Bobbert set out to change that with a simple yet powerful social experiment on the streets of Cape Town.

Armed with a camera, curiosity, and a few sincere compliments, the pair approached locals and international visitors alike, asking if they could photograph them. What followed was something truly remarkable.

The project captured a series of “before and after” portraits. The first image was taken before the individual received a compliment. The second was captured moments later after hearing simple words such as “You’re beautiful,” “You’re handsome,” “You’re gorgeous,” “You’re stunning,” or the Setswana phrase “O motle” — meaning “You are beautiful.”

The results were undeniable.

Faces softened. Eyes brightened. Smiles emerged. Confidence appeared. In many cases, complete strangers visibly transformed within seconds.

“We wanted to showcase the incredible power of a compliment,” says Michelle Bobbert. “So often we move through our day unnoticed, rushing from one task to the next. Yet a few sincere words can make someone feel seen, recognised and acknowledged.”

“”The project highlighted something deeply human: our universal desire for connection and affirmation.

“It was incredible how many people were willing and excited to take part,” says Mariusz Szczawinski. “The experience reminded us that everyone wants to feel valued. Sometimes a simple compliment can completely change a person’s mood or even their day.”

Beyond the striking imagery, the project serves as a reminder that kindness costs nothing, yet its impact can be immeasurable. In a society often dominated by criticism, comparison and negativity, these photographs demonstrate how powerful positive words can be.

The before-and-after portraits reveal more than changing facial expressions; they tell a story of human connection, belonging and the emotional impact of being acknowledged by another person.

The duo hope their project inspires others to start what they call a “Compliment Revolution.”

“Imagine if every person reading this chose to genuinely compliment just one stranger today,” says Michelle. “The ripple effect could be extraordinary. You never know what someone is carrying or how much your words might mean to them.”

The challenge is simple: acknowledge someone. Compliment someone. Make someone feel seen.

Because sometimes the smallest act of kindness can create the biggest smile.
